SpaceClaim already has the ability to export to 3DM files. Solid objects in SpaceClaim are converted into solid objects in 3DM files. SpaceClaim does not offer an option to convert solids into polygon meshes in a 3DM file. The 3DM file format is an open format used by many applications to store polygon mesh data, such as TerrainCAD, our terrain mesh modeling software. Such applications have no use for solid data in 3DM files. 3DM Export for SpaceClaim gives SpaceClaim the ability to exchange data with such applications. It tessellates solid bodies in a SpaceClaim document into a set of triangular meshes. These meshes are then exported to a 3DM file as mesh objects. The 3DM file can then be imported into a variety of CAD applications.
3DM Export for SpaceClaim is very easy to use. It adds new commands to SpaceClaim. Once installed, it automatically loads itself into SpaceClaim and adds a new ribbon bar to SpaceClaim called "SYCODE" containing the newly added commands.
The new commands are:
Export - Exports a 3DM file
Help - Displays the 3DM Export for SpaceClaim help file
Register - Displays the 3DM Export for SpaceClaim product registration dialog box
About - Displays the 3DS Export for SpaceClaim about box
The 3DM File Format
The 3DM (3D Model) file format is the native file format of Rhinoceros, the NURBS modeling software from Robert McNeel & Associates. The OpenNURBS Initiative was founded by Robert McNeel & Associates in January 2000, with the sole purpose of providing CAD, CAM, CAE and computer graphics software users reliable methods for transferring 3D geometry between applications via the 3DM file format. TerrainCAD, our terrain generation, editing and modeling software, also uses the 3DM file format as its native file format.
